چکیده

A 15-year-old male North American cougar (Felis concolor) presented with a 2-day history of anorexia, restlessness, and dyspnea. White blood cell count (22.5 × 103 cells/μL) and absolute segmented neutrophil count (21.09 × 103 cells/μL) were increased, and BUN (143mg/dL), creatinine (6.3mg/dL), and phosphorus (8.5mg/dL) concentrations indicated chronic renal disease. Thoracic radiographs showed severe pleural and pericardial effusion. During attempts to remove the fluid, cardiac tamponade developed and the cat died. At necropsy, nodular masses decorated the pericardium at the level of the base of the heart. The final microscopic diagnosis was mesothelioma of the pericardium, tunica adventitia of the main pulmonary artery, left auricle epicardium, and left ventricular epicardium. A 15-year-old female cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) was evaluated for acute respiratory distress. The white blood cell count (25.5 × 103 cells/μL) and absolute segmented neutrophil count (22.19 × 103 cells/μL) were increased. Radiographically pleural effusion and a cranial thoracic mass were seen. The cheetah was euthanized, and a gross diagnosis of disseminated pleural mesothelioma with thoracic effusion was made. Histologically, pleural mesothelioma was confirmed with local invasion of the lung and pulmonary arterial emboli and infarction. In both cases, a diagnosis of mesothelioma was made based on cellular morphology, microscopic architecture, and neoplastic cell coexpression of cytokeratin and vimentin.

Adaptive Design in Retinal Cone Topographies of the Domestic Cat, Cheetah and Other Felids

While the domestic cat has served as a mammalian model to study retinal circuitry from photoreceptors to ganglion cells, data on the visual capacities of large and endangered Felid species are sparse, We have gathered eyes from 7 felid species, cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), lion (Panthera leo), tiger (Panthera tigris), jaguar (Panthera onca), Siberian manul (Felis manul), Eurasian lynx (Felis lyn...

Claw retraction and protraction in the Carnivora: the cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) as an atypical felid

The cheetah Acinonyx jubatus is the most cursorial felid and has been described as somewhat dog-like in both the shape and the diminished degree of retraction of the claws. In this study we evaluate and investigate the osteological correlates associated with claw retraction in the cheetah through a comparison of the morphology of its middle phalanges with those of other felids and of the wolf C...

Blastomycosis in nondomestic felids.

Blastomycosis was diagnosed in six nondomestic felids from eastern Tennessee, including two Asian lions (Panthera leo persicus), one African lion (Panthera leo), one Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris), one cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus), and one snow leopard (Panthera uncia). Clinical signs included lethargy, anorexia, weight loss, dyspnea, sneezing. ataxia, and paresis. Variable nonspecific changes ...

The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) dewclaw: specialization overlooked

Both the behavioural and the morphological analyses confirm the special role of the dewclaw in the cheetah: a strong hook to stop running animals by using the energy of the victim itself. However, this would hardly be an explanation for the rather large dewclaw in the puma. The present finding of the puma as an intermediate between the cheetah and other large felids for dewclaw size, supports t...

Multicentric T-cell lymphoma associated with feline leukemia virus infection in a captive namibian cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus).

This case report describes a multicentric lymphoma in a 4 yr old female wildborn captive cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) in Namibia after being housed in an enclosure adjacent to a feline leukemia virus (FeLV) infected cheetah that had previously been in contact with domestic cats. The year prior to the onset of clinical signs, the wild-born cheetah was FeLV antigen negative. The cheetah subsequentl...
